Immunisation - 2001 Questionnaire

We first ran an immunisation questionnaire back in 2001, just after we launched the site. On this page you can read a summary of the responses together with some of the more detailed comments we received from parents.

The responses were very interesting. All respondents said their children had had the regular two, three and four month jabs. However just over 30% of respondents had not taken their children to have the MMR vaccine. It would seem that while there is no overwhelming evidence, to date, about there being a link to autism, enough parents are worried about the risk to prevent them from taking their child to have the jab.

This would seem to confirm that the stand taken by a Midlands doctor, who continues to offer single vaccines instead of MMR, is in line with a significant proportion of parents.

We will monitor the response to this situation and keep you informed of developments.

Below are a number of the more detailed comments we received from parents:

"As the mother of an 8 month old son who has already gone through the 2nd, 4th and 6th month vaccinations I feel that in a way they make me feel reassured that I have given my son sufficient protection. Even though they are painful but it's better than suffering all your life, with something that could have been prevented in the first place."

"All the scare and controversy over MMR had me worried enough to delay my daughter's jab. I read everything I could get my hands on about it, asked other mums, talked to my health visitor, searched all over the internet for information from Britain and other countries. In the end, I decided the dangers of NOT protecting her with the MMR jab far out-weighed the possible side affects of the jab. As frightening as the allegations were about serious side affects, there just wasn't any hard evidence, at least not that convinced me."

"As a parent for the first time I obviously have many questions that I will be asking over the coming months/years. Immunisation is the first hurdle I have come upon and was very anxious two weeks ago when it came to my daughter's first jabs. Thankfully, I had read an excellent supplement in a newspaper, days before this stressful occasion. All went well I might add, the only tears being mine on the way to the GP's surgery!! The article answered a lot of questions for me - apart from the MMR jabs. I would appreciate any information regarding this matter as I am not convinced that I know half as much on this subject as I need to know."

"My son came out in a rash the day after his school MMR which the Doctor diagnosed as Rubella. The nurse had told me to be wary about 7 - 10 days after the jab. Nobody had mentioned that this rash after one day was 'normal', if they had I would have been saved a lot of worry!"

"I would like to know if the school entry jabs for MMR are critical, and if the MMR jab at 13/14 months covers the child in the majority of cases."
