21 Weeks
Well we finally picked our new tv this weekend, Paul put it up on the chimney breast and now he is complaining that it might be a bit too big - typical man eh. I suggested a 37" but no Paul wanted to go that little bit extra and we have now ended up with a rather large 42 inch screen on our chimney breast. Paul isn't happy where it is and now wants to move it, so I am still waiting to decorate. So we spent most of the weekend, sorting all of that. The only good thing was that the weekend went so fast. I've never wished the weekend away so much. Finally, the day I have been waiting for - MY SCAN and I was full of mixed emotions. I was feeling really excited but at the same time, I had some worries, especially as we hadn't had the downs testing. Paul was pretty laid back about it all, he was sure everything was ok. Its all under development at the hospital at the moment, so its a bit of nightmare to find, I showed Paul where he needed to drop me off and where he needed to park, he couldn't believe how far he had to walk back to get to me, so we might get someone to drop us off depending on the time etc. Luckily for us ours was the first appointment so we went in about 9:00am, I was quite surprised we both went in together, when I had Katie, I went in first to check everything was okay before they called Paul in. The appointment took quite a while, about 40 minutes, the sonographer explained that she would take measurements of the twins and then check if everything was okay. She found both babies and they are facing inwards and looking at one another and she turned the screen round to show us before she did the measurements. That made me feel loads better knowing they were both growing, now I was just hoping that nothing was wrong and she didn't pick anything up.
She checked the measurements of Baby 1 (who is on my right hand side) and then she checked that everything was okay. She seemed to take quite a while around my belly button area, she finally told us that she was having difficulty checking everything as both of the twins were so close and their hands and feet were intertwinned and she was trying to work out whose hands and feet belonged to who. Eventually she fnished what she needed to do and then she turned the screen round to us. Katie couldn't believe it, she seemed to be in awe, as she was trying to get some good pictures, one of the twins faced the screen and its hand moved - and the sonographer turned to Katie and said "look the baby is waving at you", Katie thought it was great and she smiled and waved back, it couldn't have happened at a better time. She told us that the babies had two placentas - one each which was good news, but she couldn't tell if the babies were identical or not. She asked us if we wanted to know the sex, and although I was dying to say yes, I looked at Paul and he said he didn't want to know. Katie asked if she could get them out, and the Sonographer said the babies can't come out yet, they are only as big as mummy's hand, and Katie said `not the babies, I mean the pictures`. She loves looking at the pictures. We got three pictures which I have sent for you to see. Whilst we were waiting to see the consultant, Paul said he was really tempted to ask the sex, I couldn't believe it, if I had of known that I would have talked him into it. We talked about it and we hadn't realised that neither of us had actually asked if the babies were ok. We asked Katie what she thought and she said it was `totally wicked'. The consultant was really nice and went through all my medical history, he explained that there were two placentas, he felt that the babies were non identical and that it was two eggs that were fertilsed. I was weighed and measured and the consultant checked my stomach to make sure everything felt ok and he was happy with the scans and how I was. He told me that I needed to take folic acid tablets and iron tablets because multiples normally cause anaemia, he said I would get very big very quickly now and that I needed to make sure I got plenty of rest. I asked if I could have a normal delivery and he said that because Katie was a good normal delivery with no complications, and providing one of the babies heads was down he didn't see a problem. He did say that if the babies were breach or any other complications then it could mean a c section. He said I would have a scan every 4 weeks and my next one would be 07 August, and I would need to have a glucose tolerance test because my dad was a diabetic, so they needed to test my sugar levels. I didn't have this with Katie because my dad didn't tell me that diabeties was in his family and at that time, my dad wasn't diabetic. He also asked if we wanted to know the sex of the baby and again we said no. He asked if we had any other questions, neither of us could think of any but we walked out of there feeling really good and I was really happy knowing my babies were doing really well. To read about gestational diabetes visit our page of advice and other parents stories After my scan, I felt so relaxed and so at ease, I felt like a massive weight had been lifted of my shoulders. I've felt the babies move quite a lot just lately, and everytime I tell Paul they are moving, they seem to stop so Paul is a bit miffed he keeps missing it. Katie is always asking if she can watch them move and is always feeling my tummy. She loves kissing them both each morning and evening and giving them a love. She is always asking what they are doing, so we tell her that they are dreaming of their big sister, or watching her eating her food or what ever she is doing. She loves it, she can't wait to meet them. I haven't really done much this week as I've been busy with work and trying to sort out lots of paper work at home. The weather is lovely and hot and normally I wouldn't mind, but it is starting to get a little too much, especially when I am rushing to pick Katie up from school and then walking back. I'm absolutely shattered when I get back and I always feel like I need to go to sleep for an hour, I am definately feeling it this time round compared to when I had Katie - I didn't really know I was having her until the last couple of weeks (other than my bump). This time has been so different, I'm starting to feel tight all around my stomach and I eat a bit and feel full, so I am trying to eat little and often, but the weather isn't helping and I don't feel like it. Well that's all for this week and I will keep you up to date next week - see you soon. I hope you enjoy my scan pictures. Anita In the Womb - view at 25 weeks
