Telling the Time

Time Telling and the National Curriculum
According to the government’s numeracy strategy guidelines, children should be able to reach
these milestones:
- Reception class children should be beginning to read the time to the hour
- Children in Year 1 (age 5-6) should be able to read the time to the hour or the half hour on analogue clocks
- Year 2 children (age 6-7) should be able to read the time to the hour, half hour or quarter hour on analogue clocks
Research by leading children’s watch brand Flik Flak has indicated that these targets may not
have been met across the country.
How can I help my child tell the time?
Flik Flak is made by the makers of Swatch, and has been ticking for kids since 1987.
Flik Flak is much more than a Swiss high-quality watch with a great variety of fun designs.
Flik Flak is based on a teaching concept developed by leading experts in child education
and psychology. The dials of Flik Flak watches are specially designed to make it easy
and fun for children to tell the time.
The watches feature colour coded hour and minute hands, and come with a cardboard clock to make
learning the time both easy and fun. Two playful characters Flik and Flak accompany your child into the world of time. With every
Flik Flak watch there is a red ‘hour‘ hand and a ‘blue’ minute hand.
The collections are available in Swatch Stores, department stores and from selected retailers. Find out more by visiting
or by calling the stockist on 0870 780 5965.
